Walk Eugene along the Willamette
Eugene is an Oregon college town with miles of riverside paths and a butte in the middle of the city. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the river paths draw long lines on the map in a single walk.
River and butte
The Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System runs along both banks of the Willamette River through the city, with footbridges linking the two sides, so you can walk loops of different lengths. Alton Baker Park and the Owen Rose Garden sit along it.
Skinner Butte, on the north edge of downtown, has a short climb to a viewpoint over the city and the river, and a basalt column wall at its foot.
Downtown and campus
Downtown Eugene is a small grid with the Saturday Market, an outdoor craft and food market that runs from spring into autumn. The Fifth Street Public Market area, a few blocks north, is a cluster of shops in old buildings.
The University of Oregon campus lies east of downtown, with big trees and brick buildings. Hayward Field, the famous track stadium, is on its southern edge.
Rain and coverage
Eugene is wet from autumn to spring, with grey days and steady rain, and dry and warm in summer. The paths are flat, so they work in any season.
The riverside loops make an easy start. Spencer Butte, at the south edge of the city, has a steeper trail up to a bare summit with views to the Cascades.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Eugene is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
