Skyline over an old square

Walk Frankfurt by the Main

Frankfurt pairs a skyline of towers with a rebuilt old town and long riverside paths. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the river banks give you an easy loop to start from.

Old town and towers

The Romerberg is Frankfurt's old square, with the stepped gables of the town hall. Between it and the cathedral, a quarter of narrow streets was rebuilt in recent years in its old form, the new old town. Around it rise the towers of the banking district.

The Zeil is the main shopping street, and the Hauptwache square sits at its western end. The Palmengarten, a large botanical garden, is to the north west.

Along the Main

Both banks of the Main have riverside paths, linked by bridges including the Eiserner Steg, an iron footbridge. The south bank holds the Museumsufer, a row of museums. Behind it, Sachsenhausen is the apple wine quarter, with old taverns in its cobbled lanes.

A loop of around seven kilometres: the Romerberg, the new old town, the cathedral, along the north bank, over a bridge, back along the south bank past the museums and up through Sachsenhausen, and over the Eiserner Steg.

Coverage

The centre is compact and flat, and the river loop is easy to walk at any time. The skyline makes for good views from the bridges.

Summers are warm and winters mild. The city is busy on weekdays and quiet on Sundays, which is a good time to walk.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Frankfurt clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
