Walk Cologne along the Rhine
Cologne grew on the Rhine around one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world. FOG starts the map hidden and clears only where you walk, and the river promenade and bridges make a bright frame on both banks.
Cathedral and old town
Cologne Cathedral dominates the centre, right beside the main station, with towers over 150 metres high that you can climb by a long spiral stair. South of it, the Altstadt has small squares, old breweries serving Kolsch and narrow lanes leading down to the river.
The Rhine promenade runs along the riverbank past the old town to the Rheinauhafen, a former harbour with the crane houses, three office buildings shaped like upside down cranes, and the chocolate museum.
Across the river
The Hohenzollern Bridge, a railway bridge with walkways covered in love locks, crosses from the cathedral to Deutz. The other bank has the Rheinpark and a viewing platform with the best view back at the cathedral.
A loop of around eight kilometres: the cathedral, the old town, south along the promenade to the Rheinauhafen, over the Severin Bridge, back along the Deutz bank and across the Hohenzollern Bridge. The Belgian Quarter, west of the centre, is good for grid walking.
On the map
Cologne is flat and its ring boulevards follow the line of the old walls, so the centre forms a half circle against the river. It fills cleanly inside the ring.
Carnival in February brings huge crowds to the streets. The weather is mild, with grey winters.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Cologne walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
