Walk Genoa through the caruggi
Genoa is a steep port city whose medieval core is a dense maze of narrow alleys called caruggi, below hills of palaces and gardens. FOG covers the map until you walk it, and the caruggi are as tightly packed as any streets anywhere.
The old town
The centro storico is one of the largest medieval quarters in Europe, a maze of narrow, tall alleys between the port and the hills. The cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its striped facade, is at its centre, and Piazza De Ferrari, with its large fountain, marks the edge of the modern city.
Via Garibaldi and the other Strade Nuove are lined with Renaissance and baroque palaces, part of a UNESCO listing. Several are museums, and the street is a short walk uphill from the caruggi.
Port, lifts and the sea
The Porto Antico was redesigned by Renzo Piano, with the aquarium and promenades along the old harbour. From the city, lifts and funiculars climb the hills: the Castelletto lift leads to a terrace with a view over the rooftops.
East of the centre, the Corso Italia is a long seafront promenade ending at Boccadasse, a tiny fishing village of coloured houses. Via XX Settembre, with arcades, is the main shopping street between De Ferrari and the station of Brignole.
Steep and tight
Genoa is very steep, with stairways called creuze climbing between levels. The caruggi are shaded, but the hills are hard work.
Summers are warm and humid, winters mild. The narrow alleys can be confusing, which is part of the fun.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Genoa clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
