Walk Turin along its porticoes
Turin is a grand, gridded city of arcades, royal squares and a riverside park, with the Alps on the horizon. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the regular streets light up in very satisfying blocks.
A regular city
Turin's centre follows the grid of a Roman camp, later expanded by its royal planners. Piazza Castello, with the Royal Palace and Palazzo Madama, is the heart of it. Via Roma runs south to Piazza San Carlo and the station, under long porticoes.
The city has kilometres of porticoes, so much of it can be walked under cover. The Quadrilatero Romano, north west of Piazza Castello, is an older quarter of narrow streets and restaurants.
Mole and river
The Mole Antonelliana, a tower with a tall spire, holds the national cinema museum and a glass lift to a viewing platform. Via Po leads from Piazza Castello under porticoes to Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the river.
The Po is lined with paths. Parco del Valentino, south along the river, has a castle and a reconstructed medieval village. Across the river, the Monte dei Cappuccini gives a classic view of the city with the Alps behind.
Coverage
Turin is flat in the centre, and the grid fills in neat rectangles. The river and the hills beyond add a contrasting edge.
Winters are cold and foggy, summers hot.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Turin, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
