FOG
Lake, old town and the Jet d'Eau

Walk Geneva around the lake

Geneva wraps around the tip of a large lake, with an old town on a hill and long quays on both shores. FOG starts the map hidden and clears only where you walk, and the lakefront gives you a clean bright curve.

The lake

Lake Geneva narrows to a point at the city, where the Rhone flows out. The quays on both shores have long promenades, and the Jet d'Eau, a fountain that shoots water around 140 metres into the air, stands off the left bank. On the right bank, the Bains des Paquis is a public bathing spot on a jetty.

The Jardin Anglais and its flower clock sit at the start of the left bank promenade.

Old town and beyond

The old town climbs a hill on the left bank to St Pierre Cathedral, whose towers give a view over the lake. Place du Bourg-de-Four is the old market square. Below the old town, the Parc des Bastions holds the long Reformation Wall.

South, Carouge was built in the eighteenth century in a different style, with low houses and courtyards, a short walk away. North, the international district holds the Palais des Nations and the Broken Chair sculpture.

Coverage

Geneva is compact, and a loop of both quays, the old town and Carouge covers a lot in a day. The lake shows as a dark wedge with bright edges.

Summers are warm and winters can be cold, with a strong wind called the bise.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Geneva, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
