Two rivers, two hills, hidden passages

Walk Lyon through its traboules

Lyon is built between two rivers and below two hills, and its old quarters are threaded with covered passages called traboules. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and those secret shortcuts are exactly what clears the last patches.

Between the rivers

Central Lyon sits on the Presqu'ile, a long peninsula between the Rhone and the Saone. Place Bellecour, one of the largest squares in Europe, is at its heart, with pedestrian shopping streets running north toward the Place des Terreaux and the city hall.

Across the Saone, Vieux Lyon is one of the largest Renaissance quarters in Europe, a strip of narrow streets at the foot of the Fourviere hill. Its traboules are passageways through buildings and courtyards from one street to the next, many of them open to the public.

Two hills

Climb Fourviere, by stairs or the funicular, to the white basilica and the Roman theatres, with a view over the whole city. On the other side, the Croix-Rousse was the hill of the silk workers, and its slopes are a maze of staircases and traboules leading down to the Terreaux.

A full day: Vieux Lyon and its traboules, up to Fourviere, down and across the Saone, through the Presqu'ile, up the Croix-Rousse slopes, and back along the Rhone quays, where long riverside paths run south past the Confluence.

On the map

The traboules make Lyon unusual: routes that do not appear as streets on most maps, and that you can only clear by finding them. The hills slow you down, but they pack many paths into a small area.

The Parc de la Tete d'Or, north of the centre, has loops around its lake. Summers are hot and winters can be grey and cold.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Lyon, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
