Walk Marseille from the Vieux-Port

Marseille is a big, hilly port city on the Mediterranean, with an old harbour, a hilltop basilica and a coastline of rocky inlets. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the climbs are what make the bright lines worth it.

The old port and Le Panier

The Vieux-Port is the heart of Marseille, a rectangle of water lined with boats, cafes and the fish market. La Canebiere runs inland from it as the main avenue. On the north side, Le Panier is the oldest quarter, a hill of narrow, steep streets, stairways and small squares.

At the mouth of the harbour, the MuCEM museum is linked by a high footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean, and you can walk through the fort and its gardens with the sea on every side.

Up and along the coast

Notre-Dame de la Garde stands on the highest hill south of the port, a steep climb with the best view of the city. Come down the far side and reach the Corniche, a long road with a seafront walk running south past the Vallon des Auffes, a tiny fishing harbour under a bridge.

Further east and south lie the calanques, deep rocky inlets in a national park, reached by hiking trails from the edge of the city. Cours Julien, inland, is known for its street art.

Wind and heat

Summers are hot and dry. The mistral, a strong cold wind, blows hard on some days. Spring and autumn are excellent.

Marseille is large and hilly, so it fills slowly, but the old port, Le Panier and the coast give a dense core with long lines heading south.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Marseille clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
