Three countries on the Rhine

Walk Basel along the Rhine

Basel sits on the Rhine where Switzerland, France and Germany meet. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and here a single afternoon can clear streets in three countries.

Old town

Basel's old town sits on the left bank of the Rhine. The Marktplatz is dominated by the red town hall, and lanes climb from it to the Munster, the red sandstone cathedral, whose terrace looks over the river. The streets around it are steep and medieval.

Across the Mittlere Brucke, the oldest bridge, lies Kleinbasel, the smaller part of the city on the right bank, with a long riverside promenade.

The river and the borders

Small reaction ferries cross the Rhine on cables, pushed by the current alone. In summer, people swim down the river in the city. The Tinguely fountain, with its moving machines, sits near the theatre.

At the Dreilandereck, north of the city, the borders of three countries meet in the river. You can walk into France at Saint-Louis or Huningue, and into Germany at Weil am Rhein, where the Vitra design campus stands. Your map collection will gain a country or two in one walk.

Coverage

Basel is compact and mostly flat by the river, with steep lanes in the old town. Walks along both banks make an easy loop.

Carry identification when crossing borders. Summers are warm and winters cold.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Basel clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
