Walk Strasbourg around the Grande Ile
Strasbourg's old town is an island ringed by the river Ill, with a soaring cathedral and canals lined with half-timbered houses. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the island makes a perfect first project.
The island
The Grande Ile, the old centre of Strasbourg, is enclosed by two arms of the river Ill. Its cathedral, of pink sandstone, rises over the surrounding streets, with the half-timbered Maison Kammerzell beside it. Place Kleber and Place Gutenberg are the main squares.
At the western tip, Petite France is a quarter of canals, locks and half-timbered houses where tanners and millers once worked. The Ponts Couverts towers and the Barrage Vauban, a covered weir with a roof terrace, guard its edge.
Beyond the island
North east of the island, the Neustadt was built as an imperial German district, with broad avenues, grand buildings and the university. It is also part of the World Heritage site. Further out, the Orangerie park and the European institutions, including the Parliament, lie along the river.
Walk the riverside paths right around the Grande Ile, roughly four kilometres, and then work the streets inside it. Boat tours pass under the bridges you walk over.
Coverage
Strasbourg is flat and compact, and its centre is largely free of cars, which makes long walks easy. Winters are cold, with a famous Christmas market, and summers warm.
The island fills as a neat oval on the map, a satisfying shape to complete before moving outward.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
