FOG
Victorian grid, drumlin hills

Walk Glasgow from George Square to the West End

Glasgow is a big Victorian city of red and blond sandstone, laid out in grids over steep hills. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the city has enough streets to keep you going for years.

A grid on hills

The city centre is a grid laid over a series of hills, so many streets climb and drop sharply. George Square is the civic centre, with the City Chambers. Buchanan, Sauchiehall and Argyle streets make a long pedestrian zigzag of shops, and the Merchant City, to the east, has older buildings and restaurants.

Glasgow's architecture is everywhere: Victorian tenements, the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and grand warehouses and banks from its days as a great trading city.

West End and the Clyde

Walk west to the West End: Kelvingrove Park, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and the University of Glasgow with its Gothic tower on the hill above. Ashton Lane and Byres Road are the heart of the area.

The Clyde Walkway follows the river through the city, past the Riverside Museum and the modern buildings of Pacific Quay. East of the centre, the Necropolis, a Victorian cemetery on a hill beside the cathedral, has one of the best views of the city.

Weather and the map

It rains often, so bring a good jacket. The hills are short but frequent. The centre fills as a neat grid; the West End terraces curve around the park.

Glasgow is large, with many distinct neighbourhoods, so the city percentage builds slowly, but each district is a manageable project.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Glasgow is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
