Walk Graz from the Schlossberg down

Graz is Austria's second city, a red-roofed old town wrapped around a steep wooded hill, with a futuristic museum across the river. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the Schlossberg is the place to start.

The old town

The Hauptplatz is the main square, with the town hall and the Herrengasse leading south as the main street. The Landhaus has an arcaded Renaissance courtyard, and the old town is a UNESCO site full of red roofs, courtyards and lanes.

East of the centre, the cathedral and the Mausoleum of Ferdinand II stand together, and the Stadtpark, a broad green belt, follows the line of the old fortifications.

Up the hill and over the river

The Schlossberg rises straight above the old town. You can climb by stairs cut into the rock, ride a funicular or take a glass lift inside the hill. At the top, the Uhrturm, the clock tower, is the symbol of Graz.

Across the Mur, the Kunsthaus, nicknamed the friendly alien, is a blue bubble of a building. The Murinsel is a steel island floating in the river. The Lend and Gries districts on the right bank are lively, more mixed areas, and Schloss Eggenberg with its park lies further west.

Compact and green

Graz is compact, with plenty of parks, and the old town is easy to cover. The Schlossberg climb is steep but short.

Summers are warm and winters cold, often with fog.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Graz walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
