Walk Ljubljana along the river

The river centre
The Ljubljanica river runs through the heart of the city, lined with willow trees, terraces and a series of bridges. Preseren Square, with its pink church, sits by the Triple Bridge. The Dragon Bridge, with its bronze dragons, and the covered market stand nearby.
Much of the centre was shaped by the architect Joze Plecnik, whose bridges, colonnades and riverbanks give the city its character. The old town streets on the far bank are closed to cars.
Castle and park
Ljubljana Castle stands on a hill above the old town, reached by a funicular or by footpaths through the woods. Tivoli Park, to the west, is a large green space that leads into forested hills.
For a long walk, the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship circles the city for over 30 kilometres along the line of the wartime fence, now a green trail. Even a section of it draws a strong line on the map.
Coverage
The centre is compact and flat by the river, so it fills quickly. Metelkova, an alternative culture centre in old barracks, is a short walk north.
Winters are cold and foggy, and summers warm. The riverside is lively all year.
