Walk Zagreb from the Upper Town down

Zagreb splits neatly into a medieval Upper Town on a hill and a nineteenth century Lower Town of squares and parks. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the contrast between them shows clearly as you fill both in.

The two towns

The Upper Town, on a hill, holds St Mark's Church with its tiled roof showing the coats of arms, the Lotrscak Tower, which fires a cannon at noon, and the Stone Gate, a passage that holds a small shrine. A very short funicular links it with the Lower Town.

The Lower Town is a grid laid out in the nineteenth century, centred on Ban Jelacic Square. South of it, the Green Horseshoe is a U shaped chain of parks and squares lined with grand buildings, including the national theatre and the botanical garden.

Market and lanes

The Dolac market, just above the main square, sells produce under red umbrellas. Tkalciceva, a winding street of cafes, follows the line of an old stream between the cathedral hill and the Upper Town.

A good loop: Ban Jelacic Square, Dolac, the cathedral, Tkalciceva, up to the Upper Town and St Mark's, the promenade along the old walls, down the funicular, and around the Green Horseshoe. Mirogoj, a cemetery with long arcades, and Maksimir Park make longer walks.

Coverage

The centre is compact, so it lights up in a couple of days. The Upper Town is small and steep; the Lower Town fills in tidy blocks.

Summers are warm, winters cold, and Advent brings a big Christmas market to the squares.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Zagreb walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
