FOG
A city of rivers and remembrance

Walk Hiroshima along its rivers

Hiroshima is built on a delta, its centre crossed by rivers lined with walking paths. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the riverbanks give you long, quiet lines between the city's landmarks.

The Peace Park

The Peace Memorial Park lies on an island between two rivers, with the A-Bomb Dome on the opposite bank, the ruin of a building left standing as it was after August 1945. The museum, the cenotaph and the children's peace monument are along the park's central axis.

It is a place to walk slowly. Riverside paths lined with trees lead away from the park in several directions.

Through the city

From the park, the Hondori covered shopping arcade runs east into the centre. North, Hiroshima Castle, rebuilt after the war, stands inside its moat, and Shukkeien, a traditional garden with a pond and small bridges, is a short walk beyond.

The rivers divide the city into islands, and walking along their banks is the best way to link the sights. A day: the Peace Park, the riverside north to the castle, Shukkeien, back through the arcade. Miyajima, with its floating torii gate, is a train and ferry ride away and has trails up Mount Misen.

Coverage

Hiroshima's centre is flat and compact, and it fills quickly. The rivers make dark channels between bright islands on the map.

Summers are hot and humid, with a rainy season in June and July. Spring and autumn are best.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Hiroshima is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
