Walk Fukuoka from Hakata to the sea

Fukuoka is a relaxed, compact city by the sea, known for its open air food stalls. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the walk from the old merchant town to the seaside covers the whole city in a day.

Hakata and Nakasu

Hakata, the old merchant town, has the Kushida shrine and small temples, and the huge Canal City shopping complex. Nakasu, an island between two rivers, is the entertainment district, where yatai food stalls set up along the river in the evening.

Tenjin, across the river, is the main shopping area, with a long underground mall. Underground, GPS cannot see the sky, so those stretches stay under fog until you walk the streets above.

Park and seaside

Ohori Park has a large lake with a path of around two kilometres around it, a favourite for runners. Next to it, Maizuru Park holds the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, with walls you can climb for a view.

Further west, the Momochi seaside has a beach and Fukuoka Tower. A good day: Hakata, Nakasu, Tenjin, Ohori Park, and out to the sea at sunset.

Coverage

Fukuoka is flat and compact. The centre fills quickly, and the lake loop and seafront add clean outlines.

Summers are hot and humid; spring and autumn mild.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Fukuoka walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
