FOG
Harbour town under a mountain

Walk Hobart from Salamanca to kunanyi

Hobart is a small harbour city of sandstone warehouses and colonial cottages under a large mountain. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the trails up the mountain start almost from the edge of town.

Waterfront

Salamanca Place is a row of sandstone warehouses on the harbour, now galleries, shops and restaurants, with a big market on Saturdays. Constitution Dock and the waterfront are lined with fishing boats and fish punts.

Battery Point, on the hill behind, is an old maritime neighbourhood of cottages and narrow lanes, reached by Kelly's Steps from Salamanca.

The mountain

kunanyi / Mount Wellington rises over the city to about 1,270 metres, with a network of trails from the foothills to the summit. The Organ Pipes, a cliff of dolerite columns, are reached by a track below the summit.

Ferries cross the Derwent to MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. Sandy Bay and the riverside paths add longer walks. A day: Salamanca, Battery Point, the waterfront and up the lower mountain trails.

Coverage

Hobart is small and hilly, so the centre fills quickly. The mountain trails add long, winding lines above the city.

The climate is cool, and the mountain can be cold and snowy even in summer. Check the weather before climbing.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Hobart clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
