FOG
A long seafront on the Aegean

Walk Izmir along the Kordon

Izmir curves around a deep bay on the Aegean, with a long seafront promenade, an old bazaar and a castle on the hill above. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and the Kordon gives you a long, straight start.

Kordon and Konak

The Kordon is the seafront promenade, running north from Konak toward Alsancak, lined with cafes and lawns where people sit by the water. Konak Square has the clock tower, the symbol of the city, and a small tiled mosque.

Behind Konak, the Kemeralti bazaar is a large old market of shops, mosques, inns and narrow streets. Near it, the Agora of Smyrna is an excavated Roman market.

Hill and bay

Kadifekale, a castle on Mount Pagos, overlooks the city, with views over the bay. In the Karatas district, the Asansor is a historic lift from 1907 linking the lower streets with the hill.

Alsancak is a lively district of cafes and bars behind the Kordon. The Kultur Park is a large park nearby. Ferries cross the bay to Karsiyaka, where a seafront promenade continues on the other side.

Hot and spread out

Izmir is hot in summer, with a sea breeze along the Kordon. The centre is flat by the water, but the hill districts are steep.

The city is large, so ferries and the metro help join up walks.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Izmir clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
