Walk Jacksonville along the St. Johns

Jacksonville is the largest city by area in the continental United States, with a downtown split by the wide St. Johns River and beaches to the east. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and here the riverwalks make the first big lines.

The river

Downtown sits on both banks of the St. Johns River. The Northbank Riverwalk and the Southbank Riverwalk run along each side, and the bridges link them, including the Main Street Bridge, a blue lift bridge, and the Acosta Bridge with a walkway.

A loop over two bridges and along both riverwalks is a few miles of easy walking with views of the city. The Friendship Fountain sits on the Southbank.

Riverside and Avondale

Riverside and Avondale, southwest of downtown along the river, are historic neighbourhoods of old houses under oak trees, one of the largest such districts in the South. Five Points, at their edge, has shops and cafes. Memorial Park sits on the river nearby.

San Marco, across the river, has its own small square with shops. The Riverside Arts Market runs on Saturdays under the Fuller Warren Bridge.

Size and heat

Jacksonville is huge, and percentages of the city rise slowly. Focus on the districts by the river. Summers are hot and humid, with afternoon storms.

The beaches, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, are about fifteen miles east and have long stretches of sand for a different kind of walk.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Jacksonville clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
