Walk St. Augustine, street by street
St. Augustine was founded in 1565 and its old town is small enough to walk end to end in under an hour. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, so this is one of the few places where finishing every street is realistic in a weekend.
A tiny colonial core
St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited city of European origin in the continental United States. Its old town sits beside the Matanzas River, guarded by the Castillo de San Marcos, a seventeenth century coquina stone fort with a broad green around it.
St. George Street is the pedestrian spine, running south from the old city gates past colonial houses, shops and the Plaza de la Constitucion. Aviles Street and the narrow lanes around it are some of the oldest streets in the country.
Finishing the old town
Walk the Castillo grounds and the seawall, enter through the city gates, follow St. George Street to the plaza, and then work every side street in turn. Flagler College, the former Ponce de Leon Hotel, is just west of the plaza and its courtyard is worth seeing.
Cross the Bridge of Lions to Anastasia Island for a long straight line over the river, and continue to the lighthouse if you have the energy. The bayfront path back toward the fort is a good return.
Realistic coverage
The historic district is small enough that a determined walker can light almost all of it in a couple of days, which makes a satisfying first city to finish. The modern town beyond is spread out along highways.
Summers are hot and humid with afternoon storms. Winter and spring are the most comfortable times to visit.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so St. Augustine walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
