Walk Kamakura from temple to temple
Kamakura was the seat of Japan's first shogunate, and today it is a seaside town full of temples and shrines linked by hiking trails through the hills. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the trails make lines through the forest.
The town
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the main shrine, stands at the top of Wakamiya Oji, an avenue that runs from the beach with a raised path down the middle lined with cherry trees. Komachi Dori, a busy shopping street, runs parallel to it from Kamakura station.
Kita-Kamakura, one stop north, has the great Zen temples of Engakuji and Kenchoji in the woods.
The trails
The Daibutsu hiking trail runs over the hills from Kita-Kamakura to the Great Buddha, the Kotoku-in bronze statue that has sat in the open air since a tsunami destroyed its hall in the fifteenth century. The Tenen trail starts behind Kenchoji and loops through the hills.
Hasedera, near the Buddha, is a temple on the hillside with views over the sea and gardens of hydrangeas.
The sea
Yuigahama beach lies at the end of Wakamiya Oji. The Enoden, a small train, runs along the coast to Enoshima, an island linked by a bridge.
Kamakura is busy at weekends and in the hydrangea season in June. The trails can be muddy after rain.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Kamakura clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
