Walk Kaohsiung along the Love River
Kaohsiung is a big, easygoing harbour city with a riverside promenade, art warehouses and an island a short ferry ride away. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and the water edges make long, satisfying lines.
River and harbour
The Love River runs through the centre with landscaped promenades on both banks, lit up at night. It flows into the harbour, where the Pier-2 Art Center has turned old warehouses into galleries, shops and open spaces filled with sculptures.
A light rail line circles the harbour, but walking it is better: the harbourfront has been opened up with wide paths and new public buildings.
Island and pond
A short ferry crosses to Cijin Island, a long thin strip with a seafood street, a black sand beach, a lighthouse and an old fort. Walk the length of the island for a long straight line on the map.
In the north of the city, Lotus Pond is lined with temples, including the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, entered through the dragon's mouth and out through the tiger's. Formosa Boulevard metro station has the Dome of Light, a huge glass artwork. Liuhe night market fills a street with food stalls.
Coverage
Kaohsiung is flat and spread out, so the river and harbour paths are the best way to cover ground. It is hot and humid most of the year.
