An old capital
Tainan was the capital of Taiwan for centuries. The Confucius Temple, the first in Taiwan, sits in a quiet courtyard, and Chihkan Tower stands on the site of a Dutch fort. Hundreds of temples are scattered through the city, some huge, many tiny.
Shennong Street, a narrow lane of old two storey houses with lanterns, is one of the most picturesque streets in the city.
Lanes and the harbour
The old centre is threaded with alleys, and walking them reveals small shrines, cafes and food stalls. Tainan is known for its snacks, and finding them is half the point of walking here.
Anping, to the west, has an old fort, a tree house where banyan roots have consumed a warehouse, and old streets near the harbour. A day: the Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower, Shennong Street, the alleys, and out to Anping.
