FOG
Limestone, a fort and the lake

Walk Kingston, Ontario

Kingston is a limestone city at the meeting of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence, with a university, a fort and a waterfront trail. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the old centre clears in a few walks.

The centre

Kingston City Hall, a big limestone building with a dome, faces the harbour, with Market Square behind it, where a market runs several days a week. Princess Street, the main street, climbs from the waterfront through downtown.

Kingston was briefly the first capital of the Province of Canada, and many of its old buildings are made of grey limestone.

Waterfront and campus

The waterfront trail runs along Lake Ontario from downtown, past Confederation Park to the Queen's University campus, whose limestone halls sit by the lake, and on west to the Kingston Penitentiary, now a museum with tours.

Fort Henry, a nineteenth century fortress, stands on a hill east of the city across the Cataraqui River. The causeway across the river and the climb to the fort make a good extension, and the fort has summer evening ceremonies.

Seasons

Winters are cold, with snow and wind off the lake. Summer and autumn are the best seasons.

Kingston is compact, and the old downtown and waterfront fill in quickly. The Rideau Canal starts here, at the locks of Kingston Mills to the north.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Kingston walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
