Walk Leipzig from the Markt to the canals
Leipzig is a city of music and trade, with a ring-shaped centre full of covered arcades and a west side cut through with canals and old factories. FOG covers the map until you walk it, and Leipzig is flat enough to cover a lot of it.
The centre and its passages
The compact centre is enclosed by a ring road. The Markt is the main square, with the Renaissance Altes Rathaus. Nearby, the Thomaskirche is where Bach was cantor, and the Nikolaikirche is where the peaceful Monday demonstrations of 1989 began.
Leipzig has many passages and arcades through its buildings, such as the Madler-Passage, home of the Auerbachs Keller restaurant. Augustusplatz, with the Gewandhaus concert hall and the opera house, is on the east side of the centre.
West and south
West of the centre, Plagwitz and Lindenau are old industrial districts along the Karl-Heine-Kanal, with towpaths, converted factories and the Spinnerei, a former cotton mill full of studios and galleries.
South, the Clara-Zetkin-Park is a long green belt, and the Volkerschlachtdenkmal, a massive monument to the Battle of Leipzig, stands in the south east. Beyond the city, flooded former mines have become lakes with paths around them.
Flat and spread out
Leipzig is flat, so long walks are easy, but the city is wide. Tram lines help when you want to start a walk in a new district.
Winters are cold and summers warm.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Leipzig walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
