Walk Lille from the Grand Place
Lille has a Flemish soul: ornate gabled houses, cobbled lanes in Vieux-Lille and a star-shaped fortress in a park. FOG starts the map dark and clears only the streets you walk, and Lille rewards walking it block by block.
The squares and the old town
The Grand Place, officially Place du General de Gaulle, is the centre of Lille, flanked by the Vieille Bourse, a seventeenth century exchange with a courtyard full of second hand book stalls. The Place du Theatre and its opera house sit next door.
North of the squares, Vieux-Lille is a quarter of brick and stone houses, cobbled streets and boutiques. Rue de la Monnaie leads up to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Treille, and the side streets around it are where most of the map's detail lies.
Citadelle and beyond
West of the old town, the Citadelle is a star-shaped fortress built by Vauban, still used by the army, but surrounded by the Bois de Boulogne park and the Deule canal. A walk around its outer paths is a satisfying ring on the map.
South of the centre, the Palais des Beaux-Arts holds one of the largest art collections in France, and the Wazemmes market fills its streets on Sunday mornings. The belfry of the Hotel de Ville can be climbed for a view over the city.
Easy ground, grey skies
Lille is flat and compact, with metro and tram for the longer legs. Cobbles in Vieux-Lille are the only real obstacle.
The weather is northern: grey, cool and often damp, with mild summers. It is a good city for walking in any season.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Lille walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
