Walk Ghent along the Graslei
Ghent is a lively medieval city with a castle, three towers in a row and canals lined with guildhouses. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and its car free centre is a pleasure to clear.
The medieval core
The Graslei and Korenlei face each other across the river Leie, lined with guildhouses, and they are the most famous view in Ghent. Nearby, the three towers of St Nicholas' Church, the Belfry and St Bavo's Cathedral, home of the Ghent Altarpiece, stand in a line.
The Gravensteen, a medieval castle with a moat, sits a few minutes north. Behind it, the Patershol is a maze of narrow lanes full of restaurants.
Lanes and squares
The Vrijdagmarkt, a large square, is surrounded by old buildings. Werregarenstraat, a narrow lane, is covered in legal graffiti that changes constantly. The centre is mostly closed to cars, so walking is easy.
A good loop: the Graslei, the three towers, the Gravensteen, the Patershol, the Vrijdagmarkt, and back along the canals. Further south, the Citadelpark and the museums make a second area.
Coverage
Ghent is flat and the centre is compact, so it fills quickly, with the canals as dark threads between bright streets.
The weather is mild and damp. Evenings are lively, with the towers lit.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Ghent clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
