FOG
A medieval town inside a ring

Walk every street in Bruges

Bruges is a medieval town of canals and squares, almost perfectly preserved inside a ring of old ramparts. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and this is one of the few cities you can realistically finish.

Markt and canals

The Markt is the centre of Bruges, overlooked by the Belfry, a medieval tower you can climb. The Burg, a smaller square next to it, holds the Gothic town hall. The canals wind through the town between brick houses and stone bridges, and the Rozenhoedkaai is the classic viewpoint.

To the south, the Begijnhof is a quiet enclosure of white houses around a garden, next to the Minnewater, a lake once used as a harbour.

The ring

The old town is enclosed by a ring canal and the line of the old ramparts, now a green walk of around seven kilometres, with windmills on its eastern side. Walk the full circuit, then fill in the streets inside it.

The old town is small, so a few days of walking can clear nearly every street, which is a rare and satisfying thing. Early morning, before the day visitors arrive, is the best time.

On the map

Bruges is flat and largely car free in its centre. The ring shape on the map is distinctive, an egg outlined by canals with a dense mesh of streets inside.

The weather is mild and often wet. Cobbles are uneven, so wear good shoes.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
