Walk Antwerp, over and under the river
Antwerp has a grand old centre, a famous station and a pedestrian tunnel under the river Scheldt. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the river crossings make some of its strangest shapes.
The old centre
The Grote Markt is lined with guildhouses and the Renaissance town hall, with the Brabo fountain in the middle. The Cathedral of Our Lady, with its tall spire, stands just behind it. Het Steen, a riverside castle, guards the old waterfront.
The Meir is the main shopping street, leading east to Antwerp Central Station, one of the most impressive railway stations in the world. The fashion district lies south of the centre.
Under the river
The Sint-Annatunnel, opened in the 1930s, carries pedestrians and cyclists under the Scheldt to the left bank, reached by old wooden escalators. It is over half a kilometre long and, since satellite signals do not reach underground, the tunnel itself will stay under fog while both entrances clear. The left bank has a beach and a view of the skyline.
North of the centre, the Eilandje has old docks and the MAS museum, a tower of stacked red stone blocks with a free rooftop view. Zurenborg, south east, has streets of Art Nouveau houses, especially Cogels-Osylei.
Coverage
Antwerp is flat and the centre is compact. A loop of the centre, the docks, the river and Zurenborg covers a lot of ground in a day.
The weather is mild and often damp.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Antwerp walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
Questions people actually ask
Can you walk under the Scheldt in Antwerp?
Yes, through the Sint-Annatunnel, a pedestrian tunnel to the left bank.
Does GPS work in the tunnel?
Not underground. The tunnel stays under fog, but the streets at both entrances clear as soon as you surface.
Does it work with the app closed?
Yes. With background exploring on, FOG keeps clearing fog while the app is closed and the screen is off.
