Whiskey Row and a walking bridge

Walk Louisville across the Ohio

Louisville gives walkers a bridge over the Ohio River and one of the largest Victorian neighbourhoods in the country. FOG keeps the world dark until you walk it, so those streets are yours to light.

Riverfront and Main Street

Waterfront Park lines the Ohio River downtown, and from it the Big Four Bridge, a former railroad bridge, carries walkers and cyclists across the river to Jeffersonville, Indiana. Main Street, a block back, has Whiskey Row, a run of cast iron fronted buildings that once housed the bourbon trade, and the museum row around the Slugger bat.

East of downtown, NuLu has restaurants and galleries in old warehouses. South, Old Louisville has street after street of large Victorian houses, with St. James Court as its centrepiece.

A route that crosses a state line

Start on Main Street, walk east to Waterfront Park, cross the Big Four Bridge into Indiana, wander a little of Jeffersonville, and come back. Then head south through downtown to Old Louisville and walk its streets block by block.

The Highlands, along Bardstown Road, is a lively strip with side streets worth covering, and Cherokee Park, designed by the Olmsted firm, has a scenic loop for longer walks. Churchill Downs is a few miles south of the centre.

Expectations

Louisville is mostly flat close to the river, which makes for easy, long walks. Summers are humid; spring is the best time, especially around Derby week when the city is out in force.

The central districts form a connected cluster you can clear in a few weekends. The wider metro sprawls, so the city percentage grows steadily rather than fast.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Louisville clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
