Walk Luxembourg City along the Corniche
Luxembourg City stands on cliffs above deep river valleys, with a fortress old town and neighbourhoods in the gorges below. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the level changes make a fascinating map.
Old town on the rock
The old town sits on a rocky plateau, once one of the strongest fortresses in Europe. The Chemin de la Corniche, a promenade along the old ramparts, has been called the most beautiful balcony in Europe, looking down into the Alzette valley.
The Bock casemates, tunnels cut into the rock, can be visited. The Grand Ducal Palace and the cathedral stand in the old town's squares.
Down into the valleys
Below the cliffs, the Grund and Clausen neighbourhoods line the river Alzette with old houses and pubs. Walk down by stairs and paths and back up by a public lift. The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift, glass walled, links the valley with the plateau.
The Adolphe Bridge crosses the Petrusse valley, a park in a gorge. Kirchberg, across the Red Bridge, holds European institutions and modern buildings.
Coverage
The city is small, so a couple of days clears a large part of the centre. The valleys add winding lines below the plateau.
Public transport is free across the country, but only walking clears fog.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Luxembourg clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
