FOG
Golden castle, busy arcades

Walk Nagoya from the castle to Osu

Nagoya is a big, practical city with a famous castle, a great shopping arcade and an ancient shrine. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and its wide grid fills in steadily.

Castle and centre

Nagoya Castle, rebuilt after the war, is topped by golden shachihoko, mythical fish with tiger heads. Its grounds include the reconstructed Honmaru Palace. From there, broad avenues lead south to Sakae, the commercial centre, with the TV tower and the glass roof of Oasis 21.

The city was rebuilt on a wide grid, with large avenues and parks, so walking between districts is straightforward.

Osu and Atsuta

Osu, south of Sakae, is a district of covered shopping arcades with electronics, vintage clothes and street food, built around the Osu Kannon temple. Further south, Atsuta Shrine, one of the most important in Japan, stands in a forest of old trees.

A long day: the castle, south to Sakae, Osu, and on to Atsuta. Noritake Garden, near the station, is a quieter stop.

Coverage

Nagoya is flat and large. The centre fills in blocks; underground malls around the stations stay under fog unless you also walk the streets above.

Summers are hot and humid, winters cool and dry.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Nagoya clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
