Walk Newport's Cliff Walk
Newport, Rhode Island, is a colonial harbour town and the summer playground of the Gilded Age, with a path along the cliffs below its mansions. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the Cliff Walk draws one of the best lines on the East Coast.
The Cliff Walk
The Cliff Walk runs for about three and a half miles along the rocky shore on the east side of Newport, from Easton's Beach to Bailey's Beach. On one side is the ocean, on the other the lawns of mansions such as The Breakers and Rosecliff.
The northern part is a paved path. The southern part gets rough, with rocks to scramble over, and some stretches close after storm damage, so check before you go.
The colonial town
The old town around Washington Square and Thames Street is one of the best preserved colonial towns in the country, with wooden houses, the Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue building in the country, and Trinity Church.
Bannister's and Bowen's Wharfs, on the harbour, are full of boats in summer. The Point, a quiet neighbourhood north of the centre, has rows of old houses close to the water.
Making a loop
Walk the Cliff Walk from Easton's Beach south, leave at Ledge Road, and return up Bellevue Avenue past more mansions to the old town. The full route is a long day.
Summer is busy and the weather is best. In the off season, the town is quiet and the Cliff Walk is windy.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Newport clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
