The centre

Ships and houses
Derby Wharf, part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, runs out into the harbour, with a lighthouse at the end. The House of the Seven Gables, made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, sits on the waterfront nearby.
Chestnut Street and the McIntire Historic District, west of the centre, are lined with Federal houses built by the sea captains and merchants. Salem Common, a big green, lies just east of the centre.
October
In October, Salem fills up with visitors for Halloween, and the centre gets crowded on weekends. The rest of the year is quieter, and the old streets are easy to walk.
Salem is small, and a long day clears the centre, the waterfront and the McIntire District. The train from Boston takes around half an hour.
