FOG
Imperial castle, walls and river

Walk Nuremberg within its walls

Nuremberg's old town is enclosed by a long ring of medieval walls, with an imperial castle on a rock at the top and the Pegnitz flowing through the middle. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the walls give you a clear target.

Castle and market

The Kaiserburg, the imperial castle, sits on a sandstone rock at the north of the old town, with views over the roofs. Below it, the district around the Albrecht Durer House has half-timbered streets.

The Hauptmarkt is the main square, with the Frauenkirche and the Schoner Brunnen, a gilded Gothic fountain. In December it hosts the Christkindlesmarkt. The big churches of St. Sebaldus and St. Lorenz face each other across the river.

River and walls

The Pegnitz crosses the old town from east to west, with footbridges, the Henkersteg covered walkway and the Weinstadel, a long half-timbered building on the water. Islands and riverside paths make easy links between the two halves.

Most of the city walls survive, with towers and gates, and a path follows the moat and parks around them. A full lap outlines the old town. South east of the centre, the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Documentation Center sit by the Dutzendteich lake.

Easy walking

The old town is compact and mostly flat, with a climb up to the castle. Cobbles are common.

Winters are cold and summers warm. The Christmas market brings crowds to the centre in December.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
