Walk Bamberg over its seven hills
Bamberg is a Franconian town built over seven hills and two arms of the Regnitz, with an old town hall standing on a bridge in the river. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the hills and islands fill in surprising ways.
The island town
The Altes Rathaus stands on a bridge in the middle of the Regnitz, covered in painted frescoes. On one side of the river is the island town, the market quarter, with shops and the Gruner Markt.
Downstream, Little Venice is a row of old fishermen's houses along the water, best seen from the riverbank opposite.
The hills
On the other side of the river, the town climbs to the Domberg, the cathedral hill, with the cathedral, the Alte Hofhaltung and the Neue Residenz, whose rose garden gives a view over the roofs. The Bamberg Horseman, a medieval statue, stands inside the cathedral.
Further up, the Michaelsberg is crowned by a former Benedictine abbey. Bamberg is built on seven hills, each with a church. The market gardeners' district, the Gartnerstadt, adds flat streets on the other side of the centre.
Small and hilly
Bamberg is small, but the hill streets are steep and cobbled. It is a UNESCO World Heritage town and the whole old town is walkable.
It is famous for Rauchbier, smoked beer, served in old taverns around the centre.
