Walk Padua under the porticoes
Padua is a university city of long arcaded streets, market squares and one of the largest squares in Europe, all close to Venice. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the porticoes lead you down every street in turn.
Squares and porticoes
The Palazzo della Ragione, with its huge hall on the upper floor, separates the Piazza delle Erbe and the Piazza della Frutta, where markets fill the squares each morning. The Piazza dei Signori is just beyond, with a clock tower. Arcades line most of the streets, so you can walk much of the centre under cover.
Nearby, the Palazzo Bo is the historic seat of the University of Padua, founded in 1222.
Saints, gardens and the Prato
In the north, the Scrovegni Chapel holds Giotto's celebrated frescoes, with timed entry. To the south, the Basilica of Saint Anthony, known as Il Santo, is a major pilgrimage church with domes and minaret-like towers.
Next to it is the Orto Botanico, the oldest university botanical garden in the world. A few steps further, the Prato della Valle is an enormous elliptical square with a green island surrounded by a canal and a ring of statues. A loop around the Prato is a classic city walk.
Flat and foggy
Padua is flat, so walking is easy, and canals and old walls add structure to the map. Winters can be damp and foggy.
Summers are hot and humid, which is when the porticoes earn their keep.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
