Walk Princeton and its campus
Princeton is a small New Jersey town around one of the oldest universities in the country, and its campus is open to walkers. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the whole town fits in a few afternoons.
Nassau Street and the campus
Nassau Street is the main street, lined with shops and cafes on one side and the university on the other. Through the FitzRandolph Gate you reach Nassau Hall, the oldest building on campus, which briefly served as the national capital in 1783.
The campus spreads south from there in Gothic quadrangles and arches, past the University Chapel and Blair Arch, down the slope toward the playing fields. Paths cross it in every direction, and it is free to walk.
Down to the water
Lake Carnegie lies at the bottom of the campus, a long narrow lake made for rowing. Beside it runs the towpath of the Delaware and Raritan Canal, flat and shaded, for miles in each direction.
A loop: Nassau Street, through the campus to the lake, a stretch of towpath, and back up through the residential streets west of campus. The Institute for Advanced Study woods, further southwest, have quiet trails.
Town size
Princeton is small and very walkable, and a few walks clear most of the centre. Spring and autumn are the best seasons on campus.
Trains run on a short branch line from Princeton Junction, on the line between New York and Philadelphia.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 400 feet around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
