FOG
Peths, a fort palace and a student city

Walk Pune's old peths

Pune is a big Maharashtra city of universities and old quarters called peths, built around the ruins of the Peshwa palace. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the dense old city is a puzzle of lanes to fill.

The old city

Shaniwar Wada, the fortified palace of the Peshwas, stands in the heart of the old city. Only its walls, gates and foundations remain after a fire in the nineteenth century, and a light show is held in the evenings.

Around it lie the peths, the old neighbourhoods named after the days of the week, such as Shaniwar Peth and Budhwar Peth, with narrow lanes, old wadas and markets. The Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati temple and the Tulshibaug market are a short walk south.

Newer Pune

Camp, the old cantonment area east of the centre, has MG Road with shops and cafes. Koregaon Park, further northeast, has tree lined lanes and gardens.

The Aga Khan Palace, where Gandhi was held during the independence movement, stands in gardens in the east. Parvati Hill, in the south, has steps up to temples with a view over the city. Fergusson College Road is the student strip in the west.

Coverage

The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain. Winter, from November to February, is the best season to walk.

The peths are dense and the lanes twist, so filling them takes many walks. During the Ganesh festival, the old city fills with crowds and processions.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
