Charminar, bazaars and a lake

Walk Hyderabad from the Charminar

Hyderabad is a city of the Qutb Shahi and Nizam dynasties, with the Charminar at the heart of an old city of bazaars and a lake in the middle of the newer city. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the old city lanes are a dense map to fill.

The old city

The Charminar, a monument with four minarets built in 1591, stands at the centre of the old city. Around it, Laad Bazaar sells bangles, and the lanes are full of shops selling pearls, perfume and clothes. The Mecca Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, is next to it.

The Chowmahalla Palace, the palace of the Nizams, with courtyards and halls, is a short walk south.

The lake

Hussain Sagar is a large lake in the middle of the city, with a statue of the Buddha on a rock in the water. Necklace Road and Tank Bund Road run along its shores with paths.

Golconda Fort, west of the city, is a hilltop fortress with walls and gates. The Qutb Shahi Tombs are nearby.

Heat and coverage

Hyderabad is hot from March to June, with the monsoon after. Winter, from November to February, is the best season.

The old city is dense and the newer city is spread out. Start with the Charminar and the bazaars, then the lake.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Hyderabad walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
