Walk golden Salamanca
Salamanca is built of warm sandstone that turns gold in the evening, around one of the oldest universities in Europe and a much loved main square. FOG covers the map until you walk it, and Salamanca's compact centre fills in sharp, satisfying blocks.
Plaza Mayor and the university
The Plaza Mayor is an enclosed baroque square of arcades and balconies, often called one of the most beautiful in Spain. From it, the Rua Mayor leads south past the Casa de las Conchas, covered in carved shells, and the twin-towered Clerecia.
The University of Salamanca was founded in the thirteenth century. Its carved facade is famous for a small frog hidden in the decoration, and visitors try to spot it.
Cathedrals and the river
The Old and New Cathedrals stand side by side, one Romanesque and the other late Gothic, and their towers can be climbed for a view over the rooftops. Below them, the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea is a small walled garden.
The Roman bridge crosses the Tormes just south of the old town, and the far bank gives the classic view of the cathedrals above the river. Riverside paths run in both directions, a good way to add long lines to the map.
Hard seasons
Salamanca is on the high Castilian plateau, so summers are hot and winters cold. The centre is compact and mostly pedestrian, with a gentle slope down to the river.
With students filling the city, the evenings around the Plaza Mayor are lively most of the year.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
