FOG
A hilltop city in the loop of the Tagus

Walk Toledo, the city of three cultures

Toledo crowns a granite hill almost encircled by the Tagus, its streets layered with Christian, Jewish and Muslim history. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and Toledo packs a remarkable tangle of lanes into one small hilltop.

On top of the hill

The Plaza de Zocodover is the main square, close to the Alcazar, the massive fortress at the highest point. The Cathedral of Toledo, one of the great Gothic churches of Spain, stands in a tight web of streets a few minutes south.

West of the cathedral, the old Jewish quarter holds the Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito and the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. The small Mosque of Cristo de la Luz survives near the Puerta del Sol on the north side.

Gates, bridges and the river

The Puerta de Bisagra is the main gate in the north. Two medieval bridges cross the river: the Puente de Alcantara on the east and the Puente de San Martin on the west. A riverside path follows the Tagus around much of the hill.

Across the river on the south side, the road above the gorge leads to the Mirador del Valle, the classic view back over the whole city.

Steep, hot and crowded

Toledo is steep, with narrow, cobbled lanes. A set of public escalators climbs from the base of the hill near the Puerta de Bisagra into the old town.

Summers are very hot and dry. Day trippers fill the main streets at midday, so early and late walks find the quiet corners.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Toledo is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
