Walk Segovia from aqueduct to Alcazar
Segovia runs along a narrow rocky ridge, with a Roman aqueduct at one end and the Alcazar perched on a cliff at the other. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the ridge makes a long, clean line to clear.
Along the ridge
The Roman aqueduct strides across the Plaza del Azoguejo on two tiers of granite arches, built without mortar. From there the Calle Real, the main shopping street, climbs gently through the old town past the Casa de los Picos, with its facade of pointed stones.
The street arrives at the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, the last great Gothic cathedral built in Spain. Keep going west through quieter streets and the old Jewish quarter to the Alcazar, the castle that sits on the prow of the ridge.
Down into the valleys
The ridge is bounded by two small rivers, the Eresma to the north and the Clamores to the south, and city walls still run along much of the edge. Paths lead down from the Alcazar into the Eresma valley, where the Romanesque Vera Cruz church stands on the far side.
From the meadow near the Pradera de San Marcos you get the classic view up at the Alcazar. Returning along the Clamores side and back to the aqueduct closes a full loop around the old town.
High and cold
Segovia stands at about a thousand metres, so winters are cold and can bring snow, and summer nights are cool. Days in summer are still hot.
The old town is compact but steep at its edges, with stone paving throughout.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Segovia, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
