Walk Salvador's Pelourinho
Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, and its upper town is a hill of colonial churches and coloured houses above a great bay. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the old town packs a lot into a small space.
The upper city
The Pelourinho, the historic centre, is a World Heritage site of cobbled streets climbing between colonial houses painted in bright colours. The Sao Francisco church has an interior covered in gold. Music, especially drumming, fills the squares.
The upper city sits on a cliff above the bay of All Saints.
Down to the bay
The Lacerda Elevator, an art deco lift, links the upper city with the lower city in seconds. Below, the Mercado Modelo sells crafts in an old customs house by the water.
South along the coast, Barra has a lighthouse in an old fort and a seafront promenade. A day: the Pelourinho, the elevator, the lower city and the market, then out to Barra for sunset.
Coverage
The historic centre is small and steep. The coast adds long lines to the south.
It is warm all year. Stick to busy streets and take local advice about where to walk after dark.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Salvador is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
