FOG
Fortress, river and baroque lanes

Walk Salzburg below the fortress

Salzburg is a baroque city squeezed between a river and two hills, with a fortress above it. FOG starts the world under fog and clears only where you walk, and the hill paths above the old town add lines most visitors never draw.

The old town

The old town lies on the left bank of the Salzach, a narrow strip below the Monchsberg. Getreidegasse is its famous street, with wrought iron guild signs and Mozart's birthplace. Durchhauser, passages through buildings, link it with the parallel streets and courtyards.

The cathedral, the Residenz and a series of squares fill the southern part of the old town, below the Hohensalzburg fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

Up on the hills

Walk up to the fortress by the steep path, or take the funicular. From there, paths run along the top of the Monchsberg through woods to the modern art museum, with views over the rooftops. On the other bank, the Kapuzinerberg has a path up past a monastery.

The right bank has the Mirabell Gardens and the newer town. The Makartsteg footbridge, covered in love locks, links the two banks. A full day: the old town, the fortress, the Monchsberg, down to the river, across to the gardens and up the Kapuzinerberg.

Coverage

The old town is small and dense, and the hills add winding lines above it. The river shows as a dark curve between two bright banks.

Summers bring festival crowds, and winters are cold and atmospheric. It rains often.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Salzburg is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
