Walk San Cristobal de las Casas
San Cristobal de las Casas is a colonial town high in the mountains of Chiapas, with pedestrian streets, churches on small hills and markets full of textiles. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the compact centre is easy to complete.
The centre
The Zocalo is the main square, with a bandstand and the yellow cathedral beside it. Pedestrian streets lead from it: the Andador Eclesiastico north to the Templo de Santo Domingo and its craft market, and Real de Guadalupe east toward the Guadalupe church.
Santo Domingo has a carved facade, and the market around it sells textiles woven in the villages of the highlands.
Hilltop churches
Two churches sit on small hills at the edges of the town: the Templo de Guadalupe at the east end of Real de Guadalupe, and the Templo de San Cristobal on the west, reached by a long flight of steps. Both have views over the red tile roofs.
The municipal market, north of Santo Domingo, is the busiest place in town in the morning.
Coverage
San Cristobal is at about 2,200 metres, with cool nights all year. The rainy season runs from May to October.
The town is compact and flat in the centre, and a couple of days clear most of it.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in San Cristobal de las Casas, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
