Walk San Sebastian around La Concha
San Sebastian curves around a near perfect bay between two hills, with an old quarter famous for food. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the bay promenade is one of the finest walks in Europe.
The bay
La Concha is a shell shaped bay with a long beach and an elegant promenade with white railings. It runs from the old town to Ondarreta beach, and at the far end the Peine del Viento, iron sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, are fixed into the rocks where the waves crash.
Monte Igueldo, at the western end, has an old funicular and a view over the whole bay. Monte Urgull, at the eastern end, rises behind the old town with paths through woods to a statue and an old fort.
Old town and Gros
The Parte Vieja, the old quarter, is a small grid of streets packed with bars serving pintxos. Walk it in the evening when the bars are full.
Across the river Urumea, the Gros district has Zurriola beach, popular with surfers. A full loop: Zurriola, the old town, around Monte Urgull, along La Concha to the Peine del Viento, and up Igueldo.
Coverage
The city is compact, and the bay promenade makes a beautiful curved line on the map. The hills add looping paths at each end.
It rains often, even in summer, and the climate is mild.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in San Sebastian, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
