The Zona Colonial
Calle El Conde, a pedestrian street, runs through the Zona Colonial to the Parque Colon, where the Catedral Primada de America, the first cathedral in the Americas, stands. Calle Las Damas is often called the first paved street of the Americas.
The Fortaleza Ozama, a fortress by the river, has a stone tower from the early sixteenth century.
The Alcazar and the river
The Alcazar de Colon, the palace of Christopher Columbus's son Diego, faces the Plaza de Espana above the Ozama river. The ruins of the Monasterio de San Francisco stand nearby.
The Malecon, the seafront avenue, runs along the Caribbean from the southern edge of the Zona Colonial, with a promenade.
