Blue cobbles and old walls

Walk Old San Juan inside the walls

Old San Juan is a walled colonial city on a small island, with blue cobblestone streets climbing between two huge forts. FOG starts the map dark and clears only the streets you walk, and the old city is small enough to finish.

A walled city

Old San Juan occupies the western tip of an islet, enclosed by massive stone walls. At the point stands Castillo San Felipe del Morro, with its huge green lawn running down to the sea. Castillo San Cristobal guards the eastern edge.

Between them, the streets are paved with blue tinted stones called adoquines and lined with brightly painted colonial houses with balconies. The old city is only a few streets wide, but it is steep, and it rewards slow walking.

A route along the walls

Start at the Paseo de la Princesa, a promenade below the walls along the bay, and follow it around to the San Juan Gate. Climb into the old city, walk up to El Morro and across its lawn, then along Calle Norzagaray above the Atlantic to San Cristobal.

Come back through the centre via Calle Fortaleza, Calle San Francisco and the Plaza de Armas, passing La Fortaleza, the governor's mansion. Outside the walls, Condado and Ocean Park have long beachfront walks.

Heat and slopes

It is warm all year, with strong sun, so walk early and late and carry water. The cobbles can be slippery after rain and the hills are short but steep.

Old San Juan is small enough to light almost completely in a couple of days, a bright, dense patch on the map surrounded by the dark of the sea.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so San Juan walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
