The shape of the city
The Han River runs straight through Seoul and divides it into two different walking problems. North of the river, Gangbuk is the old city: Jongno and Euljiro, a rough grid of main roads with a fine mesh of golmok alleys packed inside every block, all of it running up against mountains. Namsan sits in the middle, Inwangsan and Bugaksan close the north, and Bukhansan looms behind everything.
South of the river, Gangnam is planned and enormous. Superblocks bounded by eight lane arterials, with a dense interior street network you only find by walking in. It looks simple from a map and takes far longer on foot than you expect, because the block edges are long and the crossings are spaced out. Seoul is also relentlessly vertical in places. Whole neighbourhoods are stairs.
A corridor worth an afternoon
Start at Gwanghwamun with the palace behind you and drop down to the Cheonggyecheon, the sunken stream that runs east through the centre. Walk it as far as Euljiro, come up into the print shops and back alleys there, then swing north into Insadong and up the hanok lanes of Bukchon. Finish by climbing to the old Seoul City Wall at Naksan and looking back down over everything you just lit.
That is a couple of hours and it draws a very legible line across the historic core. If you want length instead, the Han River parks give you kilometres of uninterrupted riverside path at Yeouido or Ttukseom, and the full city wall trail runs close to nineteen kilometres around the old boundary if you have a whole day.
Filling in Seoul
The main roads go fast and feel like progress, but they are not where the length is. Most of Seoul's walkable distance sits in the alleys behind the arterials, and those are what make the fog retreat properly. A block in Hongdae or Yeonnam-dong that takes four minutes to walk around the outside can take twenty-five to actually thread.
The river is the other thing that shapes your map. Bridges are long, and there are fewer of them than the map suggests, so the north and south halves of your cleared ground stay separate for a while and then join with one committed crossing. Underground arcades count against you a little too. Walk a long shopping passage under Myeongdong and the phone is not seeing much sky.
Weather and honest notes
Winter is cold and dry with a hard wind coming down off the mountains, and it genuinely shortens the walking season. Summer is humid and includes a monsoon stretch where you will get soaked. Spring and autumn are the good months, and everyone knows it, so the paths along the stream and the river are busy.
In the tower canyons of Gangnam and around Yeouido the trace can wander a little. That is normal for high-rise districts and it settles once you are back among lower buildings.
